How To Prepare For A Bathhouse
Bathhouses are havens for deep relaxation of the mind and muscles and they're popping up all over the country. But if you've never been to one, the idea can be a little intimidating. Silvia Barnett, the Press/Marketing Manager for Aire Ancient Baths in New York City, lays out what you need to know before you go.
1) Don't bathe if you're sick and be cautious if you're pregnant. "It depends on what stage of pregnancy you're in, but the heat isn't recommended, so ask your doctor first."
2) Up your water intake before you go and make sure to stay hydrated while you're in the baths.
3) Don't shave right before. "We recommend shaving two days before the bath. The heat makes skin sensitive and we also have a salt water pool that can irritate shaved skin."
4) All you need is a bathing suit—one-piece or bikini.
5) Yes, it's totally sanitary. "For hygienic reasons, everyone is required to wear special slippers both in and out of the water, so no one is in contact with the floor. We also have an extreme depuration system."
6) Keep talking to a minimum. "The idea is to be in an oasis, to disconnect and to lose sense of time. You don't have to be completely silent, but keep your voice low so people can relax."
7) No cell phones or watches allowed.
8) There's an order to the baths. "The most important part is the temperature circuit. You should start in a warm bath, which is body temperature, and then alternate between hot and cold. The jet pool and salt water pool can be incorporated whenever, as can the steam room. Some people prefer to do the salt water before the steam room because it closes your pores and makes the heat in the room more bearable."
9) But always listen to your body. "Your body will give you a sign when it's time to get out of a hot pool and get in a cold one."
