'Heartbroken' Selena Gomez pushed to make drastic change after Justin Bieber split
Selena Gomez has been the Instagram queen as of late, providing her hundreds and millions of fans with stunning, consistent content. She’s not the most followed female on Instagram for nothing. However, there was a time when she completely removed herself from the platform for good, after her public breakup with Justin Bieber.
Bieber and Gomez dated on and off for eight years, and were seen as the music power couple. The split came as a shock to fans across the globe and in a new interview, has opened up on how the heartbreak affected her mental health, leading her to quit social media for good.

In 2018, just after the final breakup between herself and Bieber, Gomez gave up Instagram, giving her account to one of her assistants.
Just months after their final break-up the Yummy singer started dating his now-wife Hailey Bieber, before tying the knot shortly after, in September 2018. Ever since the internet has pained a ‘feud’ between the two women.
However, they’ve taken to social media to support each other a number of times since. Just recently, they were spotted at the same restaurant, which sent fans wild. However, sources have reported they did not interact.
Of course, Selena Gomez was ‘heartbroken’ at the time, and has since opened up about why she decided to come off all social media in an interview with Fast Company.
“I had just gotten my heart broken. I didn’t need to see what everyone was doing,” she said.
“Then there were those moments of not feeling positive about how I looked because of what I’d see on Instagram. ‘Wow, I wish my body looked like that,’” she revealed.
On the topic of the ‘gram, the 31-year-old also cleared up any ‘drama theories’ after recently unfollowing Dua Lipa.
“It was an accident! I was just cleaning up some of my Instagram. Then somebody called me and was like, ‘What happened with Dua?!'” she cleared up.
The star is now the ‘best version’ of herself
Since becoming a celebrity at a young age after joining Disney, the now 31-year-old has been through a lot of hard times in the public eye.
In 2016, she was forced to cancel the end of her Revival tour, and after attending a treatment facility, was diagnosed with lupus.
She then underwent a kidney transplant in 2017. In 2020, on an Instagram live with fellow Disney alum Miley Cyrus, she also opened up about her bipolar diagnosis.
However, she now tells PEOPLE that she appreciates the struggles she’s been through.
“I have to say, turning 30 was a good moment for me. I’m 31 now, and I actually truly feel like the older I’ve gotten, the more I’ve really appreciated the struggles that I’ve had. And I don’t necessarily feel like I’m held back by anything,” she told the publication.
“I just feel like I’ve been honest with the world, I’ve been honest with myself, I’ve called myself out, and I just want to be the best version of myself.”
